The Children’s Health Insurance Program Re-authorization Act of 2009 (CHIPRA) was one of the first pieces of legislation passed by the 111th Congress and signed by President Obama. The legislation extends and expands a program – the State Children’s Health Insurance Program – that was initially implemented a decade ago, and will now extend to 2013.

Despite the unemployment rate remaining unchanged at 9.5%, some employees are still considering job changes. Among employees that are looking in these tough times, a good percentage are actually finding work. According to the US Labor department – even in these tough times – July saw businesses welcome 71,000 new employees to their payrolls. With an average hourly wage of $22 dollars, I’d say that employers shouldn’t relax their retention efforts.
Why are employees considering jumping ship? According to Deloitte’s Ethics and Workplace Survey report released July 26th, it’s the usual suspects: Missing Transparency, Lack of Trust, and Work Life Balance.
You may have guessed that I am a relationship based manager. I believe there are major workplace payoffs for getting to know your employees and responding to their professional goals and needs. My response to the age old question: “Is it better to be loved or feared?” It is much better to be loved. Fear only goes so far.
